Chapter 01
Where vinyl beats paint outright
Paint is the right answer for most walls. It is not the right answer for a wall that gets scrubbed on a schedule, or one that lives in moisture. A restroom in a school, a corridor in a hotel, the wall behind a drinks station in a convenience store: these surfaces get cleaned with something stronger than water, over and over, for years.
A painted finish in that position starts to burnish and thin where the cloth goes, and eventually the cleaning itself becomes the thing destroying the wall. Vinyl is a physical sheet with a wearing surface designed for exactly that treatment. It takes the abrasion instead of the substrate taking it.
The same logic applies to impact. In a corridor that takes carts, cases and bags every day, a vinyl wallcovering absorbs knocks that would chip a painted block wall into a maintenance ticket.

Substrate preparation and seam layout
Vinyl is unforgiving about what is underneath it, because it will not hide a defect the way a textured paint finish can. Every ridge, every unfilled joint and every piece of loose material telegraphs straight through the sheet, and once the adhesive is on, it is far too late to go back.
So the wall gets brought flat and sound first, and primed with something the adhesive will actually bond to rather than release from later. Existing coatings have to be assessed honestly, because hanging new vinyl over a surface that is quietly failing just means both layers come off together.
Seam layout is the other half. Seams get planned so they fall where the eye does not travel and where the room's own lines already break, not wherever the roll happened to run out. In a corridor that means reading the doors, the lighting and the sightline from the end before the first drop goes up.
Chapter 03
Living with it, and repairing it years later
The point of specifying vinyl is that maintenance becomes cleaning rather than repainting. A wall in a hotel corridor or a school restroom can be washed down properly, on a schedule, without the surface degrading each time it happens.
When damage does happen, and in a busy building it eventually does, vinyl repairs differently from paint. A damaged section can be cut out and replaced rather than the whole wall being recoated, which is why keeping the run and batch details from the original installation is worth doing.
